The intent of the person-directed criterion is for individuals to pursue community activities of their choosing. Community Inclusion activities are based on individual preferences and interests. Individuals may participate in activities by themselves, with friends, with natural supports, or with support staff persons (if needed).

A provider might encourage community inclusion by asking the person about their interests, such as “What things do you like to do?” or “Where might you like to go or what might you like to do outside of your home?" Individuals may have community living goals related to inclusion, and staff may accompany the individual to provide support.
