Why is community inclusion important?
July 26, 1990 marked the the signing of the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). In its findings, the ADA set forth that our "Nation's proper goals regarding individuals with disabilities are to assure equality of opportunity, full participation, independent living, and economic self-sufficiency for such individuals" (USC Title 42, Chapter 126, Section 12101.(a)(7). Despite these national goals and laws, surveys indicate that people with disabilities feel more isolated, participate in fewer community activities, and socialize outside of their homes less often the people without disabilities. To promote the full participation of persons with disabilities in our society means not only removing barriers to inclusion but encouraging and supporting these individuals to participate in community activities, events and opportunities.
